Well spotted Pavi; I didn't even remember the other thread.
I've now uninstalled PHP; edited /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd to use the other version of Apache; re-installed PHP with associated modules, and notably php-mysql; fired up Apache again, and all is well, and plus my original problem (PHP not working properly with MySQL on web pages, although it did work from the command line) is resolved.
Case closed! Thanks very much indeed for your help, and also spotting my old post; I should bookmark something here I think!
