PDF in Linux

Is there a way to read PDF's directly into the console without using the X server?

My best two shots would be

* use pstotext (yes, it does handle pdf too, despite the name) to convert pdf -> txt, and view the text using $EDITOR

* use pdftohtml and view the html using your favorite textual browser (elinks springs to mind)
