PCManfm Automount Cause Kernel Panic?

Hi, everyone,

When I unplug my usb thumbdrive, if PCManFM is running, I receive what looks to be a kernel panic. Here's my syslog file (relevant portion):

Any ideas about what's going on here? This only happens if PCManfm is running, and it happens 100% of the time, so I don't think its flaky hardware. The USB thumbdrive has an ext2 partition on it, so could the partition be corrupted or something?

Okay, so figured out that PCManFM was indeed automounting the drives, and if I unmount them before removing the drive, there is no problem. I disabled automounting, and everything is fine. I guess I should have thought of that earlier...
But, this incident raises one question. Is it normal for the kernel to behave this badly when a USB drive is unplugged? I think I have done this before, accidentally, and I don't remember anything like this happening.

I tried an Ubuntu Livecd, and it didn't launch into a kernel panic if I removed the disk while it was mounted. Is there any way I can stop this, although I usually always umount my devices before unplugging them. (I just didn't realize they were being automatically mounted)
