Page or Phone call on Server Crash

Hi,

I'm wanting to implement a new feature on my server and don't know the best way of of initiating it.

I basically want to be able to have my server email me, page me and/or call me when the my server has crashed. Given that my server provides Internet for 150 college students it is very important for me to know when it goes down.

Has anyone ever implemented a feature such as this? How would I go about doing it? And is there an online tutorial that I could reference?

It is just a general idea. Since I am not a sysadmin myself, I picked this up form the sysadmin personnel...

1) You can setup a second machine which is used solely to monitor the activities of the servers
2) when a crash/halt is detected, an alert email is sent.
3) there are services out there that provide 'gateway' which will forward the email into phone call/pager message
