OwnCloud sync: usable?

Hi all,

For some time now, I've been keen to migrate from DropBox to an open-source cloud file sync setup. A few months ago, I installed OwnCloud on my server and the OwnCloud Linux client on my desktop box (Fedora) and laptop (Mint). I then synced a couple gigs worth of files.

It was not a successful experiment.

I encountered some bizarre problems:
  • OwnCloud changing timestamps on files and folders
  • OwnCloud repeatedly restoring deleted folders
  • OwnCloud removing the executable flag from shell scripts
  • OwnCloud creating huge a number of "conflicted" copies
In addition, the Linux sync clients crashed constantly.

I've gone reverted to DropBox for the time being, which works flawlessly.

I would be curious to hear from others in this forum about their experiences with OwnCloud file sync. I am hoping to return to using it someday.

As an aside: I am using OwnCloud's CardDav and CalDav interfaces and that works really well. The contact and calendar apps are very nice indeed.

yes the carddav and caldav work near flawlessly and there are nice apps for them on both iOS and Android as well and it syncs up very nice with Thunderbird.

as for the Sync, we had issues, but nothing like you describe. ours were all due to a lack of hardware on the server.

question for you, your 2 systems that are syncing with OwnCloud are they the same user/pw combo or are you using different account from each system?

That is were we ran into issues was the sharing of the files between multiple users. when we did that our issues were very much as you describe.

when we just shared a single user account we had hardware issues only.

not sure if that helps, but i will say this. the OwnCloud forums and mailing list are rather good at helping with issues like that.

Thanks for the reply. I too find the Android CardDav and CalDav apps work flawlessly with OwnCloud.

I use the same userid on the desktop, latpop, and server, so that wasn't the problem. I have found useful information on the OwnCloud forum, but couldn't find any answers for my sync issues.

I am not using sync now, but at some point over the next few months I'll reinstall the clients and start again with a very small collection of files. I'm confident that eventually the sync client will be as robust and versatile as the Dropbox client, but it may take the OwnCloud team a year or two to get there.

Two questions for you:
  1. Are you using OwnCloud sync now?
  2. Which Thunderbird extension are you using for CardDav?

Thanks!

you will need to download and install the SOGo Connector plugin from SOGo Connector Thunderbird extension. for CardDav support in Thunderbird.
