Oracle on Linux

Hello,everyone!

Like many others in this forum, I have been using Linux since 2002. I use it as a Web,FTP,file server. And I use MySQL as my database as usual. However, I would like to try something new as the industry has many usage on Oracle. Here are some questions which I would like to ask...

1. What advantages of using Oracle when compared with MySQL?

2. Is it free (Use on Linux)?

3. Is it resource-hungry? (Use a lot of RAM or CPU)

4. Can MySQL replace Oracle if I use it in the industry (use special function like Transaction....)?

These are my questions. I hope you guys would kindly take some time to answer my questions if you have experience on this.

I would be grateful if you would drop me a line.

It's my understanding that Oracle is aimed at large businesses with massive databases, like enterprises and international companies. They do offer a free linux version. I'm not sure about the resource usage as compared to MySQL.

Thanks for the replies from you guys.

And I would like to know why Oracle is that popular in the industry while MySQL seems like getting exposure just in Small to Medium Enterprise?

Is Oracle more faster, functional than MySQL? Is Oracle easy to learn?

Thanks for the input.

Oracle is IMO the best RDBMS in the biz. It's expensive, it's a resource pig, but it blows the doors off anything else. Again, just my opinion. You can get a free, personal use version, but if you're running a business, you'll need to buy the commercial version.

Oracle is not exactly an obscure or little-known company, you can get a great deal of info about them and the Oracle database just by doing a few simply searches -- J.W.
