Hello Linux folks,

Can anyone tell me if they have experience of talking to an Oracle 8i database through Oracle 9i client libraries ?

Basically, I would like to know if Oracle 9 is backwards-compatible with Oracle 8, particularly regarding the client libraries; can an Oracle 9i client talk to an Oracle 8 database?

I know that Oracle 8 isn't supported by Oracle on RHES 3, but if anyone has experience with successfully communicating with Oracle 8 through the Oracle 9 libraries, please let me know.

I've seen issues with an 8i client accessing a 9i database. Are you getting any type of errors in your alert log or in the listener log?

Nothing like that, I just want to know what's the best Oracle client to work with on Linux, to get the most coverage of different server versions of Oracle.

In case you (or anyone else) are interested, I was told on an oracle forum that the Oracle 10g client works with Oracle servers back to and including Oracle 8.1.7.4. So I've gone with Oracle 10g because it's (relatively speaking) a fairly straightforward install on Redhat ES3.

Most installations are pretty straight forward. What I would suggest is to stick with the same version of the oracle server that you decide to install.

The only problems I've seen is with the older clients and the newer servers.
