Opera 7.1.0 B1 and Java
Hi,
I am trying to use Opera, and I downloaded the rpm, tried to install it and got a dependancy error for a certain library, libXtm.so or something similar. I tried to resolve the dependancy by downloading a package with the lib, but when I tried to install that package, it said that the lib is already there.
So I installed Opera with the nodep option, and it installs and runs. However when I run it from the command line, it says that it it switching Java off due to potential problems. When I run opera -debugjava it gives a explanation how to get around this problem (by uncommenting certain lines in /usr/bin/opera) but this still does not work, and Java still gets disabled when I start Opera.
I am using RH8.0 with the stock kernel. Did anyone else experience this problem, and if yes what did you do to get around it?
I'd be willing to go out on a limb here and say that you java issues has to do with installing opera with nodep. I'd try to resolve that issue. Try uninstalling opera and then using apt-get to install opera. apt-get is very good with depenecies. Oh yeah your going to have to download apt-get for RedHat. I think you can get it at sourceforge.net

I have apt. I tried to install opera, but the repository I am using (www.freshrpms.org) does not have opera in the repositiry. Perhaps you can give me one where they have opera, but I'd really like Opera 7, not 6.

I get that message and I installed Opera with all dependencies...so they could be unrelated. I haven't bothered investigating yet since I don't use Java.
However, on another system I did exactly what the poster above describes (problem with that lib) and while it seems to run ok...eventually I experienced random freezes, segfaults and crashes. Which were fixed once I fixed the dependency problem (this was with 6.11 tho...so I just used the static binary instead of the dynamically linked one).
