OpenOffice font probs

I am having problems with Openoffice 1.0.1 on RH7.3 systems. When installing it the system font's in the install screens are wildly wrong. They are coming up with double spacing between fonts and very scraggly looking text both during the instalation on all screens and even once the program is on all of the menu's have the same bad font. The text of the document seems OK although the fonts are not clear on the edges. The rest of the system works fine, this is only appearing in Openoffice. I have tried this same distro on two systems with the same problem and have also downloaded a fresh copy from openoffice.org and had the same problems. Anyone have a suggestion? Also how do I uninstall a program totally to ensure I am getting a clean reinstall?
