open office - writing in .pdf turns out to be confusing

at this address you'll see two files, one .pdf and one windows-.doc. i usually hand in my school tasks as .pdf, being small, fine looking at and i've had less mess compiling .pdf than .doc from open office. but since i installed suse with preinstalled oo 1.1.1 the .pdf turned out to be unuseable. is this a known problem?
i know that i could easily upgrade and hope that this issue might be solved. but on lycoris an open office installation turned out to spread it's icons in the startmenue, to places that were not supposed to be the aim. than i'd rather hand in tasks as .doc.
else: how do i connect programs to the startmenue in suse 9.1? are there files similar to the .pif in windows?

best regards
ungua
