Question Old kernel patches

Hello all.

I'll try recompiling my kernel and jumping into 2.6 in a while, but I'm not quite ready to do that yet. However, I want to use a program the requires at least a 2.4.23 kernel and I have 2.4.22. Is there a simple patch that I can download from kernel.org and run to do this one-version upgrade, or do I have to download the entire 2.4.23 kernel and recompile to accomplish this?

Thanks,
Johnathan

If your on dial-up you could simply download the kernel patch this is just the diffrence between 2.4.22 and 2.4.23 and is about 2.1Mb.

I looked around the archives but couldn't find that patch, thanks! I'll go download that and then read up on how to install patches.

cd /thepathtodownload/patch-2.4.23.bz2
tar xvjf patch-2.4.23.bz2
cd /usr/src/linux
patch -p1 < /thepathtodownload/patch-2.4.23

I think thats it.

I applied the patch and everything apparently updated fine, but my login screen still says "Welcome to Linux 2.4.22 (tty1)". Any idea where I can update this (I'm using Slack 9.1)?

Thanks,
Johnathan
