nVidia proprietary driver debian

Hello

I'm trying to install the nVidia-driver on my Debian (6.0.5) with a nVidia GeForce GT 640M.

These are the steps I tried:

1. Install Base-System x86 without X-Server
2. Install X-Server
3. Testing with startx --> everything works, but according to the log-file, the onboard-graphicchip is used.
4. Install the precompiled nvidia-packets from the debian-server (http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers)
5. startx --> Message, because the driver is too old for my card.
6. Download the newest driver from nvidia.com (304.43) and install it.
7. startx --> Error

My /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

use either the dkms method or smxi/sgfxi. Much easier.

If your system is newer you may want to install Wheezy/testing or even sid which has the newer driver.

If this is an Nvidia Optimus setup you also need to install and use Bumblebee: http://bumblebee-project.org/

Thanks for your ideas.

I upgraded to the testing-version: neither the debian-prebuild packet nor the downloaded newest driver from nvidia worked. The same after upgrading to unstable. It still couldn't detect my video card.

I have an optimus-setup, but I don't really understand the system. Where is the physical screen connected to? To the nvidia- or intel-card? And how is it possible to use the other card? And to which card is my HDMI-Output connected?
