I just installed Nvidia drivers on Crunchbang RO20111125.
I allowed Nvidia to modify my xorg.cfg and when I boot it goes in to runlevel 2.
No error messages. When I removed xorg.cfg everything went back to normal, however it doesn't load the Nvidia drivers.
Anyone ever seen this?
Crunchbang is based on Debian, so runlevel 2 is the default level, like an almost any Debian based distribution. Nothing wrong about that. I assume that you don't get the graphical login. We need more infos:
How did you install the drivers, did you install it from the repositories (recommended way) or did you install the ones from Nvidias website (can be tricky some times)?
Is the nouveau driver blacklisted?
What happens if you launch startx?
May be some errors in Xorg.0.log?
Interesting, Somehow I failed to realize that debian used a different runlevel profile. Well, I guess that explains why I didn't see any errors.
Alright. So, I installed via the Nvidia installer, and ran the nvidia-xconfig to auto-update xorg.conf. I saw no errors, in the boot process. However when I start slim and run startx I get errors. I would print the log, but I was unable to find anything relavant in the logs.
Alright, so figured it only made sense to blacklist nouveau. Not when I boot and run "lsmod" Nvidia shows up instead of Nouveau. Despite that I don't think it's working b/c nvidia-config says it's not and there is no Nvidia logo.
I tried allowing nvidia to write me xorg.conf and rebooted. Like before it didn't start the graphical environment.
I started slim, then attempted to run "startx" The error I'm getting is that there is no screen device found in xorg.conf
