Got a weird problem for you guys/girls... been using the latest release of ubuntu on my laptop for a couple of months or so and everything has been working great.
And then yesterday without any obvious reason the sound stopped working, weird thing is that i still get that little drumsound when the loginscreen loads. But as soon as gnome is fully loaded i get nothing.
Doesnt seem like it can find my soundcard anymore even tho its obviously there to play the drumsound.
Soundcard is an integrated intel something, ill look it up if its important.
not sure what your refering to, have ubuntu in my native language so might be lost in translation anyway under system/settings/sound i can choose default sound card from a menu but the menu is totally empty.
Also just noticed that when i start for example VLC (videoplayer) from the console i get sound but not when i start it from within gnome or just doubleclick the file.
Do you start it in super user mode (su) or just as normal user from the console. if so it looks like the hardware is off limits for users since you can access it only in Super User mode. in that case from the gnome menu go to "system settings" and then to "users and groups". in that window select your username from the list, select properties and add your user to all the available groups ( adm....etc etc ) then restart the X-server and see if that makes a difference.
if not, in my previous post i included some instructions. just hit the gnome menu, go to system settings and open "soundcard detection" and see what happens. i know we have different distros but the uunderlying gnome basics should be the same.
