New install of Fedora 18 64 bit

I down loaded a Fedora iso 64 bit. I burned it to a 8GB Cruiser Edge ISB disk.
It booted up and installed the program. I used it for a little bit and it wanted me to update. I set up the update and it started downloading This was around 9:30 AM it said 80MB download about the size of the original program. It now has a padlock at the top left of the screen and its 6:30PM It should have been downloaded. Is this normal or do I have problems. Depending on the web site I can down load 350 to 1000 bits a second. I haven't used linux for a few years?

I have some questions. You burn a cd or dvd but the phrase burn a usb makes me wonder how you installed this data.

I guess some dial up modem ISP could take a day for it to do that.

This doesn't sound very good. "350 to 1000 bits a second."
What is that from?

Might just get Fedora 19.

I installed a usb 8GB thumb drive in my other computer. My software says it burns a bootable iso image. I installed it in my 64 bit computer usb port and it booted up and run the check sum and installed.
I have cable service with their top speed.
Anyway I shut it down and rebooted the program was on the computer.
The drive loaded the program in around 1/2 hr. You have to use a dvd and my cd-rom won't read it. I purchased a light scribe external dvd drive but don't have it.

It should only take 6 minutes to download the latest Fedora 19 so start there.

I still don't know what you are doing with some application to burn to a usb. Use Fedora's installer to install to a usb drive.

Might tell us what this software is that you are using.

I don't get the rebooted and still there part.

Fussy ain't I?

Fedora 18 software

I can tell you that it won't fit on a cd-rom you have to install it on a dual layer dvd-r 4.7GB You have a lot faster Machine than I have to do this in 7 Min.
The Red Hat 9 is on 3 cd-roms. The complete Fedora 18 requires a dual layer dvd-r or a Thumb drive.

Fedora 18 software

I used power iso to install it on a thumb drive. ISO2USB is a free software.

We are now starting to get somewhere. You don't really need the DVD if you have high speed internet. In fact most of that won't install so you would be better off with a smaller install media I'd think.

So if you had a fat32 formatted usb and tried iso2usb it should fail on a 4.7g image.

I'd get the Fedora 19 network install media and see if that works to get you started on an install.

Is there no way to boot to a real cd/dvd?

There used to be and may still be a way to boot to gpxe in Fedora.

a bit late to this but this line has me wondering ?
Quote:
I installed it in my 64 bit computer usb port and it booted up and run the check sum and installed.
let me get this strait so that everyone here is on the same page

1)
you made a bootable usb thumb drive
2)
you plugged it into the computer and rebooted , to RUN the fedora operating system FROM the usb

you did not install the fedora 18 operating system to the internal hard drive of this computer
?? right ??

if this is the case
then running a 2 to 3 gig update for fedora 18
( yes the first update of fedora 18, 6 months after it came out , will be a update of almost everything )

over the VERY slow usb2 this will take 2 to 4 DAYS .

it took me ,on a usb2 thumb drive, 24 hours to update fedora 18 .This was a few weeks after it came out .
and that was NOT a full update .

-- if not a live usb install, as above, then .

now if this was a new install to the internal drive , using the usb instead of a dvd .
is this a single boot ?As in is fedora 18 the ONLY operating system

if not and you also have windows installed and this is a dual boot
how much room did you allocate when you repartitioned the drive to install fedora 18
