Network Manager failing to connect wirelessly

I am running LUbuntu (Ubuntu + LXDE) on an IBM Thinkpad T41.

I'm having trouble connecting to a wireless network it can see, but I am not receiving any error message to tell me why not.

It's not an encryption issue. The network is open, and has good signal strength. It is seen by NetworkManager.

I've tried killing NetworkManager and running

Code:
NetworkManager --no-daemon --log-level=DEBUG
But I cannot do that because something else will immediately spawn another NetworkManager running.

Code:
sudo service NetworkManager stop
does not work because there is not a service for NetworkManager.

If me> I would try one or the other.

Uninstall (completely remove) and reinstall Network manager and hope it fixes it.

Uninstall and install wicd and wicd-gtk in its place. Wicd will need the wireless interface typed into preferences

Code:
sudo ifconfig -a
should show wireless name like wlan0 or eth1 or whatever.

To try by command line bypassing Network manager entirely. example only

Code:
sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
brings wireless up. The same command with down brings the wireless interface down (nic).

Lastly for troubleshooting purposes

Code:
sudo echo uname: && uname -a -m -p && echo lspci: && lspci && echo lsusb: && lsusb && echo lsmod: && lsmod && echo ifconfig: && ifconfig && echo ifconfig -a: && ifconfig -a && echo iwconfig: && iwconfig && echo resolv.conf: && cat /etc/resolv.conf && echo route: && route -n
may help you in finding out what is going wrong.

I removed network-manager and installed wicd. wicd-gtk and wicd-curses both refuse to launch with a bunch of python errors.

wlan0 is a wireless usb dongle that I'm online with while typing this message, not the builtin wireless chip.
