n00b proftpd 1.2.10 questions

I am having some trouble with the commands.

The server is always running, how do I stop and start it?

How do I find what the IP adress of the server is?

I took my 2 days to get it up and running, all my permissions are correct (i think), and now i want to test it from my XP machine on the same network.
I'm running Mandrake 10.1
Proftpd 1.2.10

I take it my router and switch are going to cause problems with acessing the server from a box not on my home network, but i will battle that later.
