MySQL deleted root account and can't re-install...

Hey everyone!

Basically, I just installed MySQL, and I was just playing around with it. Somehow I deleted the root@localhost and root@localhost.localdomain accounts. So I tried to run mysql_install_db, but it didn't work.

So I thought to reinstall mySQL. So I went ahead and deleted folder /var/lib/mysql ... Then I realized that mysql came in RPM, so why don't I just try rpm -e ?

SO I tried, and it said that "this package is not installed".

Now if I try to use /etc/init.d/mysql start, it simply doesn't say anything, and the server doesn't start. if I try to do rpm -i on the server package, it tells me that there's conflict with files inside /var/lib/mysql (even though I deleted all those files)...

I have no idea what to do. I think the best solution is to remove everything related to mysql and reinstall it fresh...

HOw would I do that?

Thank you!

Did you loose your root account on your box? Or just in mysql? And what distro are you using?

I got the problem fixed.

All I had to do was uninstall MySQL package from a previous version (4.0.x), because it was conficting with the installation of the newer version (4.1.x)..

Then everything started working.
