Multiple Linux programs controlled through VNC

I am running a Gentoo Linux server. On that server there are a few X applications that are always running and that I control through VNC on other systems in my network (both Linux and Windows systems). I would like to change this, if possible. What I'd want, is to assign to each running program a screen, so if I log in to Linuxserver:1 I get (for instance) my FTP client, Linuxserver:2 gives me Firefox etc. My question is: can this be done? And is it possible that the programs will continu to run if I break the connection?

Thanks on forehand!

myself I dont like to run VNC and not to used to it.
Since VNC is attached to a specfic X instance running
you will need to open up multiply X's and run a VNC server on each.

Thats what I think , not know.

Well that's what I thought too and I'm happy with that!
How do I open multiple X servers btw? I presume that each X server needs it's own "output" device, right?
