Support for Redhat 9 was discontinued in 2004, and its successor is Fedora. The current Fedora release is version 7, so you are about 8 versions behind.
You will have difficulty installing any current software on RH9, since it is so old. I strongly suggest that you upgrade to a more recent release, such as Fedora 7. Alternatively, Ubuntu and Suse are excellent distros for newbies.
All recent distros come with an IM client, such as Pidgin (Gaim), Amsn, Kopete... One or more of these will be installed by default. All are multiprotocol, which means that you can use Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, etc.
Aoa
i try pidgin source code to install
but face following error
tel me what i do for it

checking for dlopen in -ldl... yes
checking for the %z format string in strftime()... yes
checking for GLIB... Package glib-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `glib-2.0.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable

You must have the GLib 2.0 development headers installed to build.
On RH9 I don't recommend building Pidgin from source. RH9 version of the very same program is Gaim (it was renamed to Pidgin some time ago because of lawsuits). Gaim should come along RH9, if it's not installed it should be in the RH9 setup discs, search there. When you find it, double-click to install the rpm (note: if it's .src.rpm it's the source code for it, not the prebuilt program!)
You can get RPM files for RedHat 9 (and other oldish versions) from rpm.pbone.net but I suggest you just search the setup discs and find gaim package from there. If you intend to compile Pidgin you might need new versions of various packages, libraries etc. and eventually you'd be upgrading half of your system. If you really want Pidgin, I suggest you start creating backups now and do a fresh install of Fedora (fresh install because it tends to give you less problems than trying a software upgrade).
