Mplayer sound not workin in Mandrake

I use Mplayer in Mandrake Limited Version 2005, my video is great, but there is no sound for all my files. i beleive that it is using /dev/dsp and that is why it is not working. In my sound configuration, it works on /dev/sound/dsp, but how do i make mplayer use this as default? I know this may have something to do with ~/.mplayer/config .
-Thanks

What output do you get from following command:
ls -l /dev/sound/dsp

I get this, indicating a symlink to ../dsp which is /dev/dsp:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 Sep 7 15:59 /dev/sound/dsp -> ../dsp
