MPlayer setup help

Whenever I try to play a .avi file through my MPlayer, it gives the following error message...

"Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device."

Does anyone know what this means, or how I can fix it?

I am using SUSE 9.0 Pro, and I generally install software using YaST and .rpm files. One person suggested the following, but it didn't work when I tried to install the files recommended...

"Remove the Suse-distributed xine and all related packages, go to rpmfind and download the following:

libdvdcss-1.2.8-2.network.i386.rpm
w32codec-0.52-1.i386.rpm
libxine1-1_cvs-041119.i686.rpm
xine-mozilla-plugin-0.2-041119.i586.rpm
xine-ui-0.99.2cvs-041119.i586.rpm"

I downloaded all of these files and tried to install them through YaST, but they did not seem to install. I seem to be missing something important here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

that "suggestion" is for Xine, which is not MPlayer

run "mplayer -vo help" to see the possible video output options avaiblable to mplayer, the default X output is xv, is that what it's trying to use? try "mplayer -vo xv blah.avi" to use that specific output, if that is failing, try x11. you've not really said anthing about how you actually did install it though... does the "general" rule apply here? what version is it? provide more of the error for more help
