Mozilla (Javascript) eats my CPU and memory

Every once in a while Mozilla (Netscape), typically via Javascript, just eats up my CPU and/or memory, rendering my box just unusable. (In particular, Netscape says that a web page is slowing down Netscape. Or it starts to say that. And then it give me options that, because the system is so slow can't be selected.)
Can I set anything in about:config to get around this? Is there anything more general that I could do in the OS configuration?
Thanks.

What's the spec of your system?
What distro?

When this happens, what is the output of htop?
System is updated?

Do you really mean Mozilla (Netscape), or FireFox?

It's currently Debian, but this has happened on other distros too. I didn't look at htop; the system becomes absolutely unusable. The system was updated in the spring. (My internet is pretty slow, so that doesn't happen often.)

Sorry, I guess I should say Firefox. Firefox Quantum 60.8.0esr (64-bit).

Which site are you visiting when this happens?
Have you tried disabling JavaScript before visiting that site?

I don't remember what site it was. This has happened a few times. I only have one user and one browser with Javascript enabled. (I think it's downright unethical to run software on my box when I haven't necessarily asked for it.)

Not sure I agree about unethical...but it can certainly be very irritating, especially if the script busies out the ‘puter. Some JavaScript can enhance the visitor experience considerably.
The only “fixes” I can think of are to not visit the offending site (so note which site is the problem the next time it happens) or block JavaScript in the browser before you go to it. The latter would be done with a browser add on.

Ethics is not on the vocabulary for actors who wants to do whatever they wants. I guess you know what I mean, so better be careful on what sites to visit.

Have you tried clearing the browser temp? or any temp folders that you suspect may cause the issue?

Or check out this one you might get some idea: https://kb.nmsu.edu/page.php?id=82336

Are you sure about that? On my Debian Stable (64-bit), it's currently at 68.12.0esr-1~deb10u1.
AFAIU it should be the same version even on oldstable (security updates!).

I tend to agree but it's a moot point in 2020 - javascript is so ubiquitous on the www, taken for granted.
Instead, I use an addon that gives me control - you'd be surprised how few sites actually require the js to show you something useful.
I use uMatrix, but noscript should do fine, too.

BTW, CSS animations can also be _very_ resource-intensive.
