monitor blinks

My PC configuration is a P4 1.7G 512 MB RAM ,80 GB and 8GB Hard disk Nvidia geforce mx440.I have openSuse 10.2,windows xp sp3 and fedora 8 running on my system. At times my display gets corrupted for eg: When I drag a dialog box, previous images of the box are left behind. I encounter the problem only with xp and openSuse. In the case of xp the monitor blinks and the computer restarts. However in openSuse the computer just hangs or freezs for a sec. I have installed fedora on my 8 gb disk. xp ad openSuse were installed on the 80 GB.

If you are encountering similar display problems in both XP and Linux, chances are good you have a hardware problem.

You can try, in ascending order of difficulty-

Reseat the video card.

Changing your AGP window size in the BIOS (for a mx440, it's going to be rather small).

In Linux, check the driver for the video RAM size. It might be set larger than the actual card.

In either XP or Linux, try the generic VESA (a.k.a. Super VGA)(800x600) drivers instead of card-specific drivers. I don't run Suse, but I think for Fedora the command is system-config-display or somesuch.

In Linux, try the proprietary nvidia driver, or if you are already using it, switch back to the open source nv driver.

Try another video card. Before swapping the video card, set up your drivers (in either O/S) for generic VESA/Super VGA (800x600).

Similar video cards are available quite cheap on the usual auction and surplus sites. Don't pay more than 20 bucks for an mx440.

Good luck,
HF

Thanks for the quick reply. If it is a hardware problem then how come I am not experiencing any problems in Fedora. I only have the problem in XP and OpenSUSe. How do I change the AGP window size. The card RAM is set to the correct value in openSUSE. Iam currently using the NVIDIA drivers.
