mimencode fails under elm

I am sometimes unable to add attachments to my message under elm. The error I receive is from mmencode (mimencode) and complains that it could not encode the attachment ("Cannot encode "<filename>". ("mmencode" exit status 127)"). I receive this error for different document types (MS-word docs, jpeg images, etc.) but not for every document of a specific type (i.e., I can attach some MS-word docs but not others; I can attach some jpeg images but not others, etc.).

This was working perfectly, and I have no idea what changed. I am running Slackware 8.1 with elm 2.5 PL6. I am able to encode the problematic files on the command line (i.e., invoking mimencode directly), so I suspect some metamail integration problem with elm.

Thoughts, suggestions, ideas appreciated.
