Question MEPIS/Linux learning curve questions

I am a new Linux/MEPIS user- and need a good referral book/dvd self study on how to use Linux- I am confused when I attempt to extract via command line a software package and it will not open- as in the other OS way- and know I am ignorant. My perception is, a better user guide ought to be published that looks like this- "To do this operation, do ( example- I attempted to bold and italicize the word THIS in this blog, and all that happened was BB II printed in the page)- so I want to learn, just frustrated in the process friends- you can either respond to this or email me at wkpickett0154@comcast.net which I would prefer-in addition. Thanks. wkp
