mencoder, dvd subtitles

I want to keep the hu subtitles when encoding a dvd to avi, but I have some questions in doing so:

- after reading some manuals, I suppose that the dvd's contain the subtitles in image format, in separate .VOB files. Am I right?

- if so, and I do not want to mess up with OCRs and fonts to convert the image to text, can I insert the subtitles into the movie in the original image format, or store it in a separate image file that the players will automatically read when playing the avi?

- if so, what is the related mencoder command line option?

- what is the approx. size of such a subtitle image file for a movie?

Thanks in advance
