Mandrake 9.1 and X problem

Problem:
Tosh Tecra 9100 laptop dual-boot win2k and mandrake 9.1
X displays almost all black, icons on the menus are visible when I guess where the menus are

)

Mandrake 8 was fine on this machine previously. I've tried a full re-install and testing the X config during the install, but none of the options will fix the problem. Checked my XF86Config against another user's RedHat install to make sure that the hardware settings are correct and I can't spot any glaring problems there.

Anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like a display driver problem. Check the Display settings if you can find them. I'm not sure about the console commands for it since I've been outta touch with Linux for a while.
Try a re-install if you want and selecting another monitor. That worked for me on an older Dell laptop when I had the same problem.
