Losing Sound Preferences in Ubuntu

I am comparatively new to Linux. I use Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx) about 95% of the time and only use Windows Vista on a couple of web sites that do not support Linux.
However, when I set my Sound Preferences it works perfectly for a few days, then I seem to lose the input settings which allow me to use my Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 - which results in me not being able to use Skype. But all I need to do is open Sound Preference again and reset the preference to Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 and it works fine again for a few days?
Why do I lose my Sound Preference settings?
I am not confident about Command Line solutions and prefer GUI solutions.
