Linux interface for Windows

Hello ,

Not sure if this query should be asked here. Please bare if it should not. Looking for a software which will give us the unix like interface in Windows XP.
Our main requirement is to compile C code and use Samba shares (mounted on a Linux Server) on Windows XP system.
Tried cygwin already but it is giving loads of problems configuring ssh and samba.
Please suggest.
Thanx in adv.
