Unhappy Linux installation problem BIOS error!

Hello all ,
I was installing Fedora Core 2 thru CDROM on my friends system which already has Win XP ,Installation was done on Drive of 7.8gb free space. While Installation in the begiinning itself an error came ,which is as follows :
Unable to allign partition properly ,Means that another partition tool generated an incorrect partition table ,as it didnt have correct BIOS geometry safe to ignore but ignoring may cause (fixable ) problem with some boot loader.

I ignored the error and everytime during the end of installation(tried 4 times from scratch) an error came X window error ,after rebooting the following wrror is displayed :Windows manager error ,cannot display X .
Yes I cant see the GUI interface for fedora core 2 ,only the command line screen .

Any help on the cause and guidelines to overcome above problem would be appreciated .

Thanks in advance .

Regards
abhishek

Thanks in advance .

Did you format it as ext2/ext3? Because if you format it as FAT or NTFS then during installation change the format there might be problems. If they were ext2/3 from the beginning then I don't know what's wrong, sorry.

You said it was one drive that is devoted to Linux, not just another partition? I would go with ^him and format it as ext2/ext3 because according to that error message whatever you are using to format is not formatting the drive right. How old is the hard drive, maybe it's going bad which is why the partition tables are incorrect. I'm bumfuzzled too.

I have formatted the chosen partition as ext3 , but was bit surprised during the booting up of linux to see the Filesystem of type ext2 . hard disk is 1 and half year old ,I was pissed off at the motherboard which was of Mercury {local brand here} ,wasnt even showing detection of peripherals while booting . One more thing during the installation of windows there are two more options of booting into windows xp and 2k ,I believe my friend hadnt installed Windows Xp properly ,could this fact lead to BIOS error .

Are there any commands which I should try out on linux to give any specific information .
There was one option in advanced boot loader confoguration of using LBA32 , but consequences might damage the boot up process [the warning was given],has anyone tried this option during any boot loader problem ,if yes what were the consequences .

I use LBA32 option on at least of my machines. Otherwise (I seem to remember) it will not boot RedHat8 on large disks. This is a multiboot Win2000/RH7.3/RH8

This however is not (likely) the cause of your X problem.

All of that information is stored in the boot.ini file on your Windows partition and doesn't have any effect on your BIOS. The only boot information your bios holds is what order to look at the devices in. Anything after that, including the os choices menu/bootloader is stored in the MBR of the hard drive.
