Linux Codecs Packet and...

Im looking for a multimedia codecs packet for Linux (preferably as .deb package). Im running Kanotix inside Vmplayer. I don’t want mplayer codecs as they seem to be too problematic to install. Also, as a newbie to Linux if I make some mistake by installation is there any sort of “clean-up” software available for “stray software”? Much obliged

installing the "mplayer" codecs is really really simple. just place the untarred files in /usr/lib/win32 and that's it.

what's the full command your running and it's output? personally i always use the "all" package as you might as well. i'm not sure what's even meant to in the essential one, there should be some .so's for sure.

The command that Im using is....tar -jxf -essential-amd64-20071007.tar.bz2 -C /usr/lib/win32....
Ive also tried......tar xvfjp essential-amd64-20071007.tar.bz2 ......with....
cp essential-amd64-20071007/* /usr/lib/win32.
In both cases output is only these files.....cook.so....drvc.so....sipr.so and a txt.
I should have mentioned that Im not using mplayer, kaffeine is my player of choice but apparently I need the same codecs.
