LILO ends with lil-

Hi everyone,

I'm learning for lpic1 exam where lilo is a part of it. The error messages are a bit confusing. I mostly find in the www that the error message "lil-" means /boot/map has errors (not guilty), reasons are wrong hd geometry or /boot/boot.b has moved. That is confusing errors in /boot/map and /boot/boot.b has moved Or is ist the /boot/map has moved?

Thanks for answers

"That is confusing errors in /boot/map and /boot/boot.b has moved Or is ist the /boot/map has moved?"

The problem is that lilo depends on absolute disk address. The lilo installer builds /boot/map with an absolute disk address pointing to /boot/boot.b. The lilo installer builds the MBR with an absolute disk address to /boot/map. So if you move either /boot/map or /boot/boot.b lilo will get lost. You also can get the problem is you use the dd command to copy a partition to a disk with a different geometry.

I think that moving /boot/map will give you an error message of lil and moving /boot/boot.b will give you an error message of lil- but I am not sure of that.

It's been years since I used LILO. Isn't it possible to repair lilo by booting from install cd (select 'boot from hd' or some such thing) or boot a liveCD and mount the partition containing lilo and chroot into it, then run /sbin/lilo to repair a broken lilo bootloader?
