LD_LIBRARY_PATH problem

Sir,
Sorry, if I am on the wrong place, but pls. reply if you have an answer.
1. I have Fedora core 4 installaed on compaq nx7010.

2. Though
"export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$HOME/oracle/instantclient_10_2"
is there in the .bash_profile (user:gmo), but on issuing command
"echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH" gives "/var".

However, on giving the command from terminal:
"LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$HOME/oracle/instantclient_10_2",
it gives the correct output of "echo LD_LIBRARY_PATH".
Any idea?

3. This setting is specifically needed for instantclient_10_2 of oracle.

4. I have installed tora 1.3.16 OK, but tora-oracle-1.3.16-1.rhel4.i386.rpm with nodeps. tora window in Fedora 4 shows up in Connection Provider MySQL & ODBC but oracle is not shown. Any how tora doesnot connect to oracle through the sqlplus of instantclient. I really need it. Is there a way to connect tora by instantclient.
I have no other oracle installation of any type.

5. It says some file name libclntsh is needed, I donot have that on my machine.

Thanks

Well, I can't help you with Oracle specifically, but perhaps .bash_profile is not getting executed OR something executed after .bash_profile is modifying the path.

If you do 'source .bash_profile', does LD_LIBRARY_PATH get set properly? Do you have any evidence that .bash_profile gets executed at login? Perhaps you could add a line like "touch BASH_PROFILE_WORKS" and see if the file gets created.

Actula problem is tora not getting connected to oracle remotely.

However, by doing
source .bash_profile
the environment variable gets set correctly.

Also, the .bash_profile gets executed properly for sure. I have other variables set into the same file, such as:

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:$HOME/oracle/instantclient_10_2
export PATH

SQLPATH=$HOME/oracle/instantclient_10_2
export SQLPATH

are set correctly. Also, as suggested, by inclusion of
"touch BASH_PROFILE_WORKS" file gets created.

However,
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$HOME/oracle/instantclient_10_2:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH

does not set the variable.

It would be interesting to know.

Sounds to me like some script being executed later in the login process is clobbering your LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Look in the other login scripts for related information.

How and where to look?

1. I got some way around.

2. Already installed tora normally (without --nodeps), and tora-oracle with --nodeps.

3. First run the command
"export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$HOME/oracle/instantclient_10_2";
so that LD_LIBRARY_PATH points as expected.

4. Now from terminal, execute the command "tora". Now that tora window in Fedora 4 shows up oracle too along with MySQL & ODBC in the Connection Provider.
Executing tora by system menu doesnot show up Oracle in the connection window of tora.

5, Whether it results into successful connection to oracle, I can tell tomorrow only, as I am not on the intranet LAN now.
