How do I find and modify LD_LIBRARY_PATH

I am trying to get the Gimp 2.0.1 installed and the new GTK but it
pkg-config which I modified to reflect the new versions, but the compiler comes back and says to try modifying the LD_LIBRARY_PATH as pkg-config points to the new but the system still sees the old?

LD_LIBRARY_PATH is just a normal PATH variable in your /etc/profile. if you need to modify it only for the installation then you could easily do an export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/what/ever/you/need. if you need it to be a constant change then you should edit it in the /etc/profile.

hope this helps.

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/some/place/lib:/some/lib:/some/other/place/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

Something like that?
