LaTeX editors & software

Hi,

I want to learn LaTeX, so I'm looking for some LaTeX editors & compilers for linux.
I'm a LaTeX beginner, so I want to try different editors first, for seeing which I like.
Maybe anybody can give me some good LaTeX editors? I also don't know which LaTeX compiler I have to use, so advice is welcome!

thanks in advance

Just use your favorite (text) editor, be it emacs, vi, gedit, ksomethingnotepadthiswaycomes, ...

For compiling the files, I (mostly) use pdflatex from the tetex-bin package (which, unsurprisingly, is a part of the `tetex' \TeX system), but the package name may differ across distros.

hi,

But I'm not so experienced using latex, so I'm looking for a sort of IDE for writing my latex files and compiling them by pushing a button.
Are there such programs?

thx

I don't know any. If you are not afraid of using the commandline, you could make a 'makefile' to latex or pdflatex your tex-file. In that case your 'pushing a button', is executing 'make'.

I think it's a three-liner:
Code:
default: myfile.pdf
%.pdf: %.tex
<tab> pdflatex $<
