There have been a lot of threads about this recntly so a search would have solved your problem already. The msn protocols have changed, so you need to install an updated version of kopete. For a suse rpm, go to this site and download and install kdenetwork3-InstantMessenger.

Gaim and AMSN work fine still and are much better than kopete.

Since this post date, gaim has moved to be called pidgin. Just an FYI.

As an afterthought, M$ is constantly changing their messaging protocol, and I noticed that for some time (until I updated) pidgin wouldn't connect to my MSN messenger. What I ended up doing was going into the certificates section of pidgin, and deleting all of those having to do with MSN, or LIVE. After that everything worked great. I had to do this on multiple computers running pidgin, so its not just coincidence.

Hope this helps you out if you are still having problems
