That would be one word eg. knoppix nodhcp give that a try and see it it works. If it boots once you get to KDE desktop click on the monitor with a clamshell on it in the taskbar and type in sudo netcardconfig and try to configure the network that way.
also what type of NIC is it? there are still a lot of 10/100/1000 onboards NICs out there that are not detected by most distros Knoppix included. I know my Asus MB has one that is not detected by SuSe, FC, Debian (even with the 2.6.x kernel) or Knoppix. i had to install an older 3Com 3C905b in my system for linux to auto detect my NIC.
Could be if you wanted too but Knoppix has a dialog based configuration tool called netcardconfig which will try either dhcp or static settings based on what you tell it to do.
