Open kmail, open 'settings -> configure kmail', highlight 'network' In the 'sending' tab make sure your settings are correct. If you send mail through your isp use 'smtp' not sendmail. Make sure your isp's settings are correct. Make sure your passwd and username are correct...click apply.
Other than that, you aren't really giving much useful information to help you with.

there is really not much information left to give. i know what should be entered in the configuration files because i have set up the same email accounts in other email clients. the same information works for outlook and for netscape. the only information that kmail gives is the message that i posted originally. i thought that there might be a problem a little deeper than the configuration.

Can you receive mail from your isp? Are you using smtp rather than sendmail as your default outgoing account?
I can send outgoing mail no prob with kmail, so I don't think it is a problem with the app.

honestly I'v found that configuing kmail to use sendmail usualy works out the best. Since all your return sender info is embeded in the email itself and is setup in your profile there is no real reason to send using your ISP's mail program. I ran into the same issue with my work mail account, by switching my sen protocall to sendmail everything works beautifully, of course that does mean that you will need to make sure you have sendmail installed, most distributions do this automaticaly.
The one other thing it might be, is I have heard of cases where a persons firewall causes issues like what you describe, if you are running a fire wall you may try opening up the same port your ISP uses for their mail send program.

Sure, but it is kind of overkill to run a full-fledged mail server just to send outgoing mail.
As for the firewall...as long as you are allowed to initiate outgoing traffic from the local box, as pretty much every firewall does, this wouldn't affect it.

Thats true that it may be a little overkill, but again most distro's that I'v tried install sendmail by default so it's running anyways.
also most people rarely push their computers to their maximum, myself included and I work with both 3D and 2D Graphics tools as well as sound editing so I figure having sendmail running in the background is not a big issue. Now I'm no sendmail expert but it seems to be a relativly small server as well.
As for the firewall, never seen that issue but have heard of it, if it does not fix your problem by opening the port, by all means close it right back up.

scratch that, the mail leaves the outbox but does not appear to be going to the rest of the world

I have the same problem, and I read somewhere that it was a recently discovered bug on some systems. I'm going to update KDE to 3.2.3 tonight and see if there is any change.

i am using kde 3.2.3 and still have the trouble. in fact kmail was working until i went to kde 3.2.3. i would try 3.2.2 but not after what Xian said. i have tried to delete the kmailrc file which has fixed some stuff in the past, no go. i have tried to remove kmail through synaptic but it trys to pull kde off with it.

I tried something and I've been able send all my mail today successfully. I decided to check the Kmail security settings and see if there were some options that could be lowered. I really have no idea if this is what actually addressed the problem, as I also just updated KDE via the new SuSE rpm's, but perhaps you can try on your box and let us know what happens.
Anyway, here's what I did:
Open Kmail. Goto path Settings/Configure Kmail.
Click the Security Icon. Click the OpenPGP tab.
Select "Don't Use Any Encryption Tool" from the dropdown menu.
Click Apply. Click Save.

Same problem, sort of
Hi, all
Just going through the same problem -- mail says sent, in sentmail box, and nothing happening beyond that! NOW, after switching to "sendmail" and dropping the encryption, it seem to be working for ONE of my accounts, if not all. Any ideas on why it's picking and choosing which addresses it will send mail to?

Didn't quite do 'er...
Thought I had it licked, but I don't.
Using KDE 3.1.4, KMail 1.5.4 on SuSE 9.0.
For the longest time, sending mail didn't go anywhere. It seems to send OK, then goes to the sentmail box, and for all intents and purposes just hangs out in the sentmail box quite happily.
It doesn't actually GO anywhere, though.
Now, after dropping the security settings and switching to sendmail instead of SMTP, I can send to one address (Videotron, a supplier here in Canada), but not many others (my own main mail address and other people using smaller ISPs or their own domains). Mail does NOT go to Hotmail, either... just, it seems, Videotron.
Is there any reason KMail would "hate" some domain names more than others, or perhaps something about it that might make spam filters vewwwy, vewwwy angry???
EDIT: Other things I should probably mention: I am using sendmail as the default, but the #2 option is Videotron's SMTP system. Maybe I can only send to Videotron because I'm "on" the Videotron system? In case you hadn't guessed, I'm a newbie!
EDIT 2: I'm getting other mail not sent by me just fine. As far as I know.
EDIT 3: Mozilla sends just fine using the same SMTP protocol to all (as far as I know) addresses.
EDIT 4: I've just spent an hour trying to simply switch to Mozilla, but Kmail doesn't have an export utility, and Mozilla doesn't have an import utility that works. I can't even find where Mozilla's bloody mail store folder is and can't figure out how to change it. This is phenomenally frustrating.
EDIT 5: I'm at work now, and of all the tests I sent from home this morning, only the Mozilla test got through. Which means that KMail will only send to one domain, which is the same domain that the SMTP relay works through.
I give up.
