kill artsd PERMINANTLY! (i dont use it, but it hogs /dev/dsp)

hey guys...
i keep having trouble with sound on my system....

infact sound never works.. untill i killall artsd.
the only programs i use which have sound need me to kill arts
for them to work.

i cant uninstall artsd because of dependency's
and i dont want to --nodeps to my shiny new installation.

so how can i set arts not to load ?
every time i kill it, it reloads itself.
what am i doing wrong ?

what means "no sound" ?.

there are some applications that attempt to use /dev/dsp directly
and others that use (i.e., require) artsd.

I have no problem with artsd staying killed.

Is kedinit artsd parent on your system?

I mean None of my Games / Multimedia can output sound because /dev/dsp is being used by artsd.

but killall artsd fixed the problem.

so i wish to stop the artsd program completely.

Yes, artsd seems to be started by KDE version 3.2.

I agree with qwijibow. The aRTS sound server in KDE 3.2 sucks big time, I have had to go back to using KDE 3.14 on both my Slack boxes because /dev/dsp, /dev/mixer and aumix are hog tied by aRTS.

I'm still on KDE 3.1.2. But in the Control Center under Sound and Multimedia there is check box to enable/disable the startup of artsd. Is that still there in 3.2?

Control Center -> Sound & Multimedia -> Sound System. First tab says 'artsd'. First entry on the page is then a checkbox: 'enable artsd soundserver at startup'. This is still KDE 3.1 tho'.

Or edit
$HOMEDIR/.kde/share/config/kcmartsrc
replace
StartServer=true
with
StartServer=false
