Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root FS on 01:03

I've been attempting to install MNF several times, each time something bombs on me. I did manage to get it installed but some settings got messed up so I reinstalled. This time I when I start the installer I get the following message.

Code:
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount rood FS on 01:03.
I then tried using Mandrake 9.2 and 9.1 network install boot floppys of the official mirrors and got the same message. I thought perhaps the file system on the disk got screwed up so I used the Maxtor utilities to test the drive and wipe it, both ran without incident. Try booting up the install CD again, same message.

So what should I start doing?

FIC SD-11 & Athlon 550
Maxtor 20GB

That would usually inidcate that the file system
you chose isn't compiled into your kernel...

E.g.: you format as XFS but only compile ext2
into the kernel and have XFS as a module.

Cheers,
Tink

The FS should be supported by the installer, I used exactly the same CD I had for the initial install that I tried overwritting. Floppy versions of standard Mandrake 9.1 or 9.2 did the same thing.
