Ok, I'm new to linux and coding. I need some real 'laymans term' help with trying to boot Linux ubuntu GNU 6.06 from livecd. I've searched and searched for help for about 2 hours but still nothing has worked. I burned the CD with ISO and booted from it and I get to the little menu where I can select what I want to do. (install and start, memory test, and whatnot) When I try the first option which is something like start and install, it loads the first 2 files then this message pops up, everytime...
"Uncompressing Linux...Ok, booting the kernel [17179569.684000] ..MP-BIOS Bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC! Kernal panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work! Boot with apic=debug and send a report. Then try booting with the 'noapic' option."
I don't know what that means, or what to do! Is there anyone that could shed some light on this please?
Alrighty, thanks for the little trivial help on that syng00! Now I'm able to run Ubuntu GNU 6.06 off the livecd, but it doesn't let me onto the internet! Any tips on setting that up?
Best tip I can give is for you to get the current CD. Dapper is quite old - the current version is Feisty (7.04). Two "versions" later, and supports much more hardware.
If you want/need to stay on Dapper, try wiki.ubuntu.com - they have some quite good articles that may help you through.
That said, Ubuntu is generally pretty good - how are you trying to get on the 'net, and what hardware/chipset are you using ???.
Ah, the chipset addition to it confused me I guess. Cable through a linksys router. I gave the 7.04 another shot and it worked after running noapic. The first time I tried installing it, it worked until it said "Remove disc from tray and press enter to reboot." I removed it and closed it, and hit enter, it just froze there. I thought, hey, I'll let it do its thing maybe. Came back about 5 minutes later and it was still there, so I'm going to reinstall it again to see if that works.
Alright, this is strange but, everytime I boot ubuntu from the generic selection I just get a blank screen but when I boot it from the recovery selection, it takes me to the debugging process and I type in exit and it loads ubuntu. Does it have anything to do with dualbooting Vista?
Possibly - depends on the messages you get.
I don't have a Vista system, but I'd suspect you could add a boot option to skip the disk scan; might get you around it.
I have installed it for others, and don't recall a similar issue with Vista already on the box.
The 8254 error *I think* is related to your mobo - a quite new mobo with with newish NVIDIA chipset...
I have the same issue with a Gigabyte M55S-S3 that uses NVIDIA 550 chipset when i try to run Ubuntu 7.04 AND the RC for Gutsy... Adding noapic does enable the LiveCD to work but then I get plagued with USB issues.
Regarding the boot option, you'll need to edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst file file and add the noapic option at the end of the kernel line.
Yea I put this thread up first before I saw the newbie area and can't figure out how to delete it!
In the future, don't start new threads when you already have one that deals with the same issue. Use the report button to ask a moderator to move it for you. Cheers.
