kernel


ok i installed RH9 about 2 months ago and i have been reading about people updating their kernels. I have the 2.4.20-6 kernel and i was wondering if i should update it and what benifits would i get from updating it.

You probably don't need to. I updated because I needed an acpi feature that wasn't in the old one.

If all your hardware works leave it alone.

Usually people compile a new kernel for one of two reasons:
To add functionality lacking in an earlier kernel. (SATA support, for example)
Or just for fun...try something different like running a super-secure patched kernel.

With redhat, I wouldn't bother. When new kernel comes along you'll recieve notice via the red hat update agent, and it'll be taken care of for you.

ive also heard alot about the 2.6 kernel that will come out sometime soon. what will this kernel features will this kernel have compared to the 2.4 kernel?
