kernel 2.6 printing fails with magicfilter, apsfilter

I've been using magicfilter with kernel 2.4 for years without problems.
In kernel 2.6 I can print plain text via lpr and can print ps files if I convert them by hand but the automatic filter programs don't work: nothing is printed at all and the log file shows "Interrupted system call".

I haven't tried Cups because I' ve never got on with it in the past.

Anyone had any experience of this in recent kernels?

Well, as no one has replied I'll do so myself. I tried installing Cups, which had not worked for me a few months ago. This time it installed flawlessly and it works correctly in kernel 2.6, so the problem is solved.
