KDE won't load

I have just finished emerging KDE on Gentoo 2004.1 and have changed the .xinitrc file in my home directory to this
Code:
exec kde
But when I try startx I get this error.
Code:
/home/darinf/.xinitrc: line 1: exec: kde: not found
I have been able to startx with fluxbox and then run kdesktop which then gives me a window with the home and trash can icon and konqueror works fine. Any ideas on what's wrong?

Thanks,
