Question k3b error on loading?

I've just updated k3b from the default which came with my SUSe 9.0 distibution in order to be able to write mp3 files to CD. I found and downloaded the most up to date rpm from the SUSE ftp site.

First of all I used YaST to remove the old version then installed the new rpm. When I try and run the prog. from KDE the splash screen appears and looks to be loading, it gets as far as giving me the message "Creating GUI..." Then it just closes with no messages.

When I try and run k3b from a console the message I get is as follows:

mike@linux:~> k3b
mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding
WARNING: KGenericFactory: instance requested but no instance name passed to the constructor!
k3b: relocation error: k3b: undefined symbol: _ZN11KMainWindow4showEv

Can anyone help me out and point me in the right direction to sort this out? Many thanks in anticipation.

Mike

Did you also upgrade KDE at the same time? There's a good chance that "the most up to date rpm from the SUSE ftp site" (and which one is that, btw? k3b -version ought to tell you) is designed to be compatible with KDE 3.2.x rather than KDE 3.1.x, which I assume is what you're using.

So you might want to upgrade KDE or revert to the original version of k3b.... why won't it write mp3s to CD, whereas the newer one would?

As a further test, I did /opt/kde/bin/k3b -version in a terminal, and to my surprise, the output was:

Qt: 3.3.1
KDE: 3.2.0
K3b: 0.11.6

rather than just the version of k3b. So you might also want to investigate your version of qt. And oddly, I actually don't have KDE installed, but I guess it's just reading the version of the libs that are installed in order to enable k3b to run at all. So I'm pretty much thinking that your problem has to do with the base KDE libs and qt version conflicts with what this version of K3b is looking for.

Hope that helps with the pointers, in any case.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm in work on a windows pc at the moment so I cant check but as far as I know it was an rpm for KDE3.1.x which is what I'm running.

I'll check tonight when I get home and post back what I find out.

Thanks.

Well I tried what you suggested and got the following reported:

Qt: 3.2.1
KDE: 3.1.4
K3b: 0.11.6

I verified that the rpm I used was indeed for KDE 3.1, so I guess I may need to update Qt?? I'll see what I can find at the SuSE site and let you know.

I have the same exact problem. I upgraded to 11.9 because of the mp3 thing as well.
The RPM I downloaded was for SuSE 8.2 (which does NOT have KDE 3.2.x by default).

How can i update my KDE/QT without compiling anything?

Thanx

NOTE: When running from console, I also get the following output:

Code:
mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding
WARNING: KGenericFactory: instance requested but no instance name passed to the constructor!
k3b: relocation error: k3b: undefined symbol: _ZN11KMainWindow4showEv
