Issue setting xorg.conf to 1400x900

Hi
My kids computer has slack 12.2.
That computer has no network access

Video card is Intel 82G33/G31
The monitor has the capability 1400x900 60Hz

However no matter how I edit the xorg.conf file the viewing is still the same
1024x768 at 75Hz

That computer has no network access so the rest is guessing.
I think (only guessing) that the G31 chipset is included in the kernel and that there is no proprietary driver for the 82G33/G31

As I recall, it appears to be using the vesa driver.

Any suggestions?

Check the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to see what driver is specfied there. Assuming your distro/kernel is fairly up-to-date you will want to use the 'intel' driver instead of 'vesa'. You may be able to specify the resolution in the same file in the Display section using the 'Modes' parameter.

You can also check the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log for error messages if you have further problems.

[Having said all that, I see a recent Debian install does a lot more auto-detection than used to be the case, and there is little information in the xorg.conf file. I'm not too familiar with way of setting up X.]

I do not see the intel driver in the /etc/X11 directory. I assumed it was included in the kernel.
Do you suggest I just change

Quote:
Driver "vesa"
to
Driver "intel"
I tried to add but did not seem to work.
Quote:
Section "Monitor"
HorizonalSync 32.0 -75.0
VertRefresh 60.0

Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "VESA Framebuffer"
Monitor "My Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1400x900" "1024x768"

Yes - changing 'vesa' to 'intel' there was what I suggested. I don't know where Slack puts this stuff. Debian has it in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ (file is intel_drv.so, plus some other modules). It is not a kernel module - it comes from a xorg package. I am using this with the G31 chipset - but only 1280x1024.
