is there a program that can turn a short avi clip into an animated gif file

i have some video clips that i would like to use in web pages and Internet forums as animated images. is there a good free program out there that can get the job done. i also noticed that several gif images on the Internet lag like they skipped several frames, i don't want that i want the animation to play smoothly even if it means the file size will be astronomical

Hi baronobeefdip, Welcome to LQ. I believe ffmpeg should do this.

Code:
ffmpeg -i video.avi picture.gif
There is more here.

http://howto-pages.org/ffmpeg/

Good luck. ;-)
