internet makes gnome hang

Hi there! I'm having a problem that whenever i'm connected to the internet, using either gnome-ppp or pon, when I try to open some things they'll just not open. Like for instance the file manager. But after I disconnect I can open it. Not everything wont open, but quite a few things and its really annoying. Anyone know what the problem might be? I'm running Ubuntu warty warthog release. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Do you have a hostname set? I seem to recall Gnome acting flaky without a hostname. Just an idea...

My hosts file wasn't right, cuz whenever I logged in gnome would say it couldn't find host "family" and that I might have to edit hosts file. Anyways, so I fixed that, and stuff does seem to work better now, and I had thought it fixed the problem, but it still wont open the filemanager when i'm connected to the internet. it also wont open gedit. it makes no sense, and its really annoying... hrmmm.
