Intermittent kernel panic - steps 2 diagnose?

Whole machine freezes with this message, that doesn't seem to log to /var/log/kernel/current or messages so I've had to copy out excerpts by hand with pen + paper!

How do I start to tell what is going on? The problem is intermittant and I'm running:

2.6.10 vanilla now with ACPI and scheduling disabled as well and still the problem comes up. With this turned off it does it less.

Code:
Process Swapper (pid:0 threading info=c04b8000 task=c042db00)
Stack: ....
Call trace:
[<c011953>] runtimer.softirq+0x11f/0x170
unknown boot option +0x0/0x...
code: f3....

Boot from your installation cd. Check the kernel line in your bootloader config file (grub.conf, menu.lst, lilo.conf ?) whichever it is you're using.
That line about 'unkown boot option' may be something in the boot options in that config file.
If you can't figure it out, try posting the contents of the bootloader config file.
You may need to create a mount point in /mnt (the /mnt running from cd) to mount the root partition (or boot partition is /boot is in it's own partition). Then mount the partition in order to check the bootloader config file on the harddrive, and not the one running from cd.

The thing runs for about 2 days at a time before crashing.

Boot options are:

append = "hdc=ide-scsi gentoo=nodevfs"

I'll disable them both, and take the cdburner out ready for when it next crashes and I reboot.

Here's a photo of another crash:
